Sachin set to become an IAF officer
New Delhi: Indian cricket icon, Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar will soon become an officer of the Indian Air Force as the Air Headquarters have finalised plans to make him an honorary Group Captain.
With almost all the cricket records under his belt, this distinction will add another feather to Tendulkar’s cap as it’ll be the first time a cricketer will get this honour.
The Air Force has forwarded the necessary files to the Defence Ministry but the formal announcement will only be made after it gets the consent from Prime Minister`s Office and the President.
It`s not often that the armed forces give civilians honorary ranks and there was a considerable debate as to what rank should the great batsman be given. There were discussions for the category of Wing Commander and Squadron Leader, but these ranks were deemed to be junior for the cricketing legend, who has served Indian cricket for more than 20 years.
Last year the Territorial Army conferred South film-star Mohanlal and 1983 World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev the rank of Honorary Colonel, while industrialist Vijaypath Singhania was made an Air Commodore for holding a world record in high altitude hot balloon flying.
